Stage 1 consultation - What we heard

From August to September 2024, we consulted with the community and received great community feedback for the renewal of Olympic Ave Reserve playground.

19 people provided feedback through an online survey and direct emails to the Open Space Planning Team.

From the design options we provided, several popular features have been incorporated into the final concept design including a log pile feature that emerged as a community favourite. We’ve also added a gravel pathway connecting the existing concrete path to the playground for easier access.

Key feedback highlights:

  • Community use and design fit: Our initial thought was that Olympic Avenue Reserve was not popular with local residents as it lacks natural surveillance because of its location near the bush reserve. We planned to deliver a natureplay area instead of playground equipment and intended to expand the Kirwana playground which is more accessible and a larger space. However, community feedback, especially from local young families suggests that Olympic Ave playground is well-used. Therefore, we’ve adjusted our plans based on what we heard.
  • Playground location and accessibility: the initial layout placed the playground further from the existing concrete path, raising accessibility concerns. In the updated design, we’ve moved the playground closer to the path for improved visibility and safer access.
  • Amenities (public toilets and BBQs): This play space is classified as a local park, adding public toilets and BBQs is beyond the scope of this project.

Thank you for your input and collaboration on this project!

About the space

Olympic Avenue Reserve is Montmorency. This park is classified as a Local play space as outlined in playground classifications of our Public Open Space Plan 2016-2031. The reserve is central to Olympic Avenue, Grand Boulevard, and Buena Vista Drive, and can be accessed from all three streets. However, steeped access from Olympic Avenue can be challenging. The park contains a playground, seating, and an asphalt path through the reserve but no connection to the playground.

Your new play space

Considering the reserve's topography and natural vegetation, a local nature play playground has been proposed, offering children a diverse and engaging sensory experience. incorporating natural elements such as rocks, logs, sensory gardens, and more.

Key considerations for Olympic Avenue reserve nature play play space were:

  • Play experience and diversity - considering nature play elements and diversity of play.
  • Connectivity - improving the location and layout of the seating so that it provides better connection to the playground.

Stage 1 engagement - What we heard

From August to September 2024, we consulted with the community and received great community feedback for the renewal of Sackville Reserve playground.

21 people provided feedback through an online survey and direct emails to the Open Space Planning Team.

From the design options provided, several popular features have been incorporated into the final concept design including a picnic table, which emerged as a community favourite. We’ve also added classic play elements like a swing and slide, nature play features, and new benches.

Key feedback highlights:

  • Community use and design fit out: Our initial thought was that Sackville Reserve was not popular with local residents because of its location and its close proximity to Olympic Ave Reserve and Kirwana Reserve. Population data also showed an increase in elderly residents in this suburb. Based on these factors, we proposed transforming Sackville Reserve into a gathering space with more seating and nature play elements instead of traditional playground equipment. However, community feedback indicated a strong preference to keep classic playground features, so we’ve adjusted our plans based on what we heard.
  • Amenities (Public toilets and BBQs): This play space is classified as a pocket play space, adding public toilets and BBQs is beyond the scope of this project.

Next steps:

Sackville Reserve will be constructed next financial year, so we will conduct a usage survey over the coming year. Since Olympic and Kirwana playgrounds will be constructed this financial year and are close to Sackville Reserve, we want to monitor usage carefully to see if our proposed plan for Sackville is the best fit. Our goal is to use the budget wisely to ensure it benefits the community.

Thank you for your input and collaboration on this project!

The park is well used by local families and will be updated in the 25/26 financial year.

From the design options provided, the carousel feature emerged as the most popular choice. This has now been incorporated into the final design.

Key feedback highlights:

  • Monkey bars: the main play structure now includes monkey bars, adding an element of fun and adventure for a more engaging experience at the park.
  • Hill slide: while we explored the option of a larger embankment slide, tree protection zones and budget constraints limited the size. However, a smaller, enjoyable slide down the hill has been included.

Play networks

A new play network for local parks and play spaces in North East precinct!

Play Networks are developed when several pocket or local playgrounds are located within walking distance of each other. Council is working to create local play networks by strengthening the connection between parks and play spaces.

In Montmorency there are three parks within close proximity.

  • Olympic Avenue Reserve
  • Sackville Reserve
  • Kirwana Play Reserve

We will be renewing these spaces, taking into consideration their location and strengthening their connection to provide the community with a high-quality experience. We will be adapting these spaces to meet the needs of this area, considering evolving demographics, usage and ensuring safety.

We are proposing a park and play space network that offers diverse environments to cater to the needs of different generations.
