Project update

Construction of the Gabonia Street Reserve - Watsonia playground is now complete.

We consulted with the community and received feedback from 18 community members through the online survey and emails sent directly to our Open Space Planning Team.

We heard what you said:

  • Playground has been redesigned to incorporate activities for older children. This includes increasing the slide height, adding a rope bridge and monkey bars
  • Stairs were added to improve useability for toddlers
  • A taller swing set
  • The concrete path will now connect to the powerline footpath as that was the preferred path for access.

Some residents requested a mary-go-round, concrete loop track or for the land to be sold and the playground removed. We explored different options on how to incorporate your feedback into the designs. Unfortunately due to budget and existing commitments, we are unable to achieve these outcomes.

About the space

Gabonia Avenue Playground is a small reserve in Watsonia. It has an existing swingset and springer.

This reserve is classified as one of Banyules pocket park playgrounds and is now scheduled for renewal. We are excited to continue to provide a high quality playground experience at Gabonia Avenue Playground and we are seeking your feedback on the proposal.

Improving your playground

We will replace the existing playground with new and improved equipment to meet the needs of the local community. The new equipment will be bright and colourful for children to enjoy.

Improvements include:

  • A swing set with a strap seat and a toddler seat.
  • A small play unit with a slide, ladder, twist net, climbing wall and fire pole.
  • A new concrete path connecting the playground to Gabonia Avenue
  • A new seat
  • Tree planting around the playground
