Project update
We consulted with the community and received feedback from 16 community members through an online survey and emails directly to the Open Space Planning Team. Thank you for your comments and suggestions about the space.
Some discussion points were:
- Fencing: The fence length will run approximately 35m along Railway Road, Williams Road and 67m from Plantation Lane to Railway Road.
- Equipment for children/youth: We received a number of requests to install equipment for older children, such as a flying fox and basketball court. E J Andrews is a local level park with a focus on younger children and all abilities access. Montmorency Park is due for renewal this financial year and will focus on older children/youth within its design creating play diversity throughout the neighbourhood.
- Selection of plant species: The landscape architects and Environment team are working together on plant species selection. E J Andrews Reserve is within close proximity to Banyule’s wildlife corridor so we will ensure appropriate species are used to enhance the area.
- Grass area: The grass area in the reserve is currently being used as a laydown area by Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP) as agreed upon with Banyule City Council. This area will be restored in late 2023.
Construction of this play space was completed in December 2023 and it is now open to the community.
About the space
EJ Andrews Reserve is a small reserve in Briar Hill. The playground has existing wooden play equipment, a swing set, shade trees and a concrete path.
This Reserve is well-used by local families and was rehabilitated after its use by the Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP) as an equipment and storage area during the completion of the Hurstbridge Rail Line Duplication.
Construction of EJ Andrews Reserve playground was completed in December 2023. We partnered with the Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP) who provided funding to help deliver improvements to the existing playground. The reserve was upgraded with a new wheelchair accessible playground and extensive landscaping, as per the actions in the Banyule Public Open Space Plan 2016-2031.
We are excited to continue to provide a high-quality playground experience at EJ Andrews Reserve.
