Project update

We received some great community feedback for the renewal of Station Road Reserve playground.

The feedback identified a broad range of ideas, including the importance of nature-based play opportunities. The benefits of nature-based play for children’s development aligns with Council's intent to provide greater play diversity and a network of play experiences.

We made adjustments to the design concept to reflect your feedback.

The new space includes:

  • a new bench seat
  • a new path to connect the space with the existing footpath
  • nature-based play elements including log balance beams, vertical log steppers and climbing poles.

The Station Road playground works are now complete.

About the space

Station Road Reserve is a small reserve located in Station Road, Rosanna.

This park is classified as a pocket play space as outlined in the playground classifications of our Public Open Space Plan 2016-2031. The reserve forms part of a larger Melbourne Water drainage and sewage reserve with the Salt Creek drain passing through it. it also acts as an informal connection to Douglas Street and Rosanna Library.

Parks classified as pocket play spaces are usually very small with only one to two pieces of play equipment.

As part of the improvement works for Station Road playground, we have undertaken a detailed site analysis. The site analysis helps us determine the opportunities and constraints for the project and helps the Open Space and Planning team develop a concept that aligns with the project budget, the playground classifications, Public Open Space Plan 2016-2031 and Council initiatives to provide Local Play Networks and Play Diversity (see definitions below).

Key considerations for Station Road playground are:

  • site access and maintenance
  • play experience and diversity
  • seating and functionality
  • fencing and safety
  • Melbourne Water Salt Creek drainage and other infrastructure
  • playground classification.

Our intention is to provide a play space with a new and improved area to meet the needs of the local community.

Note that we'll also be developing a Masterplan for Rosanna Parklands, which will include a regional play space for the community to enjoy. You'll also have an opportunity to have your say on what is included in this play space. Stay tuned!

Definitions

  1. Play Networks: where there are several pocket or local playgrounds located within walking distance of each other, Council will endeavour to create a local play network by strengthening connection between playgrounds.
  2. Play Diversity: Council will work towards providing a complete range of play experiences in each precinct. When designing, upgrading or replacing playgrounds, we will give consideration to the types of play experiences already available in the neighbourhood and include play experiences currently not available locally.
