About this space

Located on Gillingham Street in Watsonia North, the Gillingham Reserve is a spacious reserve with play equipment featuring a slide, spiral ladder, chain bridge, see-saw, swings and a balance beam. Visitors can also enjoy the barbeque and seating located within the reserve.

Council seek to provide diverse play experiences within a suburbs, so we’d like to replace the equipment with a unique piece that complements the offerings at the nearby that are Kalista Crescent and Hakea Reserves.

Look out for our proposed design and share your thoughts on its play value for the community.

What should we consider as we plan the replacement of this playground?

Full size or proper half court basketball court The concrete squares dotted around the municipality are truly useless unless you're a toddler. Adults deserve recreation spaces too. If not here up on the hill at Binnak park would be perfect.

Looks great for the bigger kids, but please please please include some ride on animals or a smaller in-ground slide for their younger siblings! This is a large park, make as much use of the space as possible! There are heaps of young preschool kids in the area. Shade, safety fencing & better access to the park up that steep bank are important!!

The new playground doesn't appear to have any monkey bars! The one thing my daughters would really love (and the reason we always end up at Binnak Park). So if a set of monkey bars could be added (aren't usually that expensive) that would be really appreciated. Also, it doesn't seen to be small children friendly with the slide being up high etc.

The proposed plan lacks safe equipment for younger children. There's not even a smaller slide. No sign of BBQ area or shade either.

An easy to use playground for all ages with swings, slides and something different to keep the kids entertained most parks have the same old boring playground. Also having a covered playground helps keep the kids out of the sun and keep the equipment out of the sun so that it dose not bur the kids hands when they touch it.

Speaking to my children (2 and 8) they have had the following requests: Half the park fenced as a dog run so they meet other local dog owners and include the elderly residents. New swings with two baby swings so my daughter can swing next to her friends and slides A covered BBQ area so we can have community get togethers during the year.

Something different that is not in the area would be a skateboard/scooter area and Basketball ring. It’s a big park and would be great to utilise the space more as there are a lot of teens in the area including my own that are into the scene. Would also be nice to make the park a bit more greener with plant life as it is pretty bare looking.

More visible to the street and properly lit for safety. Heavier tree line on the ring road side is warranted. Overhaul of the current children's playground to include an obstacle course style playground. An inclusion of an adult/youth training area towards the ringroad which incorporates bars and rings for calisthenics based training

My wife and I live on the corner of Kalista & Gillingham and have 7 kids between us ranging from the ages of 9yrs to 16yrs believe it or not. But we would love it if the playground could have a number of equipment that will be good for all our kids. Eg: Basketball Ring, BBQ area with shelter, play equipment enclosed with fence and soft ground
