We have rich precinct-specific data from 83completed surveys and 44 conversations at the Were Street Reserve Montmorency pop-up on 1 June 2024. Additionally, 9 people from North East Precinct participated in Community Vision workshops.

What we understand about North East Precinct

Thinking and planning for precincts is about recognising the unique character, needs and priorities of different locations and the people that live there.

The following information highlights some of the things we learnt from people in North East Precinct during the 2023 Living in Place survey. This information was the starting point for Banyule Futures engagement that took place from April to June 2024.

Who are we?
The image is titled North East Precinct – Who are we. This image describes the North East Precinct population. The North East Precinct includes the suburbs of St Helena, Eltham North, Briar Hill and Montmorency. The population is 17,595 and is forecast to grow by 3.3% by the year 2041. There are 47.9% Males and 52.7% Females in North East Precinct. The average age is 42 years with 39.5% people aged 50 years and over. 16.8% were born overseas and 10.5% speak a language other than English at home. The unemployment rate is 3.4% with an employment rate of 65.9%. The average weekly household income is $2,206 and the Socio-economic rating is 1081, compared with 1058 for Banyule.
North East Precinct Priorities

North East Precinct Concerns

Healthcare and Hospitals is third on the list at 27%. Environment, pollution and water concerns are fourth on the list at 27%. Transport, public transport and infrastructure is fifth on the list at 23%. Household debt and personal debt is sixth on the list at 23%.
Health and Wellbeing
The image is titled – Health and wellbeing in the North East Precinct. When asked about their future physical health, the North East Precinct rating is 7.3 out of 10 stars, while the Banyule wide rating is 7.3 stars. 8% of people in the North East Precinct said their physical health will get worse. 67% of the people in the North East Precinct said their physical health will stay the same. 26% of the people in the North East Precinct said their physical health will get better. When asked about their future mental health, the North East Precinct rating is 7.4 out of 10 stars, while the Banyule wide rating is 7.5 stars. 8% of people in the North East Precinct said their mental health will get worse. 73% of the people in the North East Precinct said their mental health will stay the same. 19% of the people in the North East Precinct said their mental health will get better. When asked about their future social wellbeing, the North East Precinct rating is 7.4 out of 10 stars, while the Banyule wide rating is 7.5 stars. 7% of people in the North East Precinct said their social wellbeing will get worse. 78% of the people in the North East Precinct said their social wellbeing will stay the same. 15% of the people in the North East Precinct said their social wellbeing will get better.
Health and Wellbeing
The image is the second image titled Health and Wellbeing in North East Precinct. 34.2% of people in North East Precinct have one or more long term health conditions, compared with 33.4% in Banyule. 4.4% need assistance with core activities compared to 5.9% for Banyule. 15.5% report some form of voluntary work compared to 14.4% for Banyule. In 2021 63.5% of people in the North East Precinct had completed Year 12, compared to 66.4% for Banyule.
