Watsonia Road angled parking to stay

17 December 2024

Background

  • As part of the Watsonia Town Square project, Council looked at how to make up for spaces impacted as part of the project works.
  • We looked at changing spaces on Watsonia Road between Morwell Avenue and Tennyson Street from angled to 90°.
  • Community members raised concerns about this change and valued the easy-to-use existing angled carparking.

Feedback

  • In November 2024 we held a drop-in session about the proposed changes.
  • Approximately 50 community members attended, with most opposing the proposal to change the angle to 90°.

Decision

  • Council officers have reviewed the proposal and will be retaining the angled parking.
  • As there are slightly different angles of parking along that section of Watsonia Road, new line marking will make all the spaces 60° and consistent through the centre.

Next steps

  • The new line marking will be done in January 2025 after the busy Christmas trading period resulting in a total of 40 spaces.
  • We’re upgrading the 3 accessible parking spaces that will include a shared area for unloading.

Other information

  • Access to the spaces will be via left turn only.
  • There will be no reduction in the width of the bays.
  • Other works to complete Watsonia Town Square project will recommence in early January and are due for completion by mid-2025 as planned.
