Watsonia Town Square - January update

20 January 2025

Watsonia Road crossing - temporary detours and lane changes

We’re pleased that the new pedestrian crossing on Watsonia Road will be completed over the next ten days. Watsonia Rd will be one way (north-bound) from 23 January and 24 January while we do this work. The Grace St and Watsonia Rd intersection will be temporarily closed on these days. There will be detour signs and traffic management in place. Businesses and houses in Morwell Avenue will be accessible via the detour.

  • 23 - 24 January: Intersection surface painted terracotta (red) to highlight the area, including the pedestrian crossing (Grace St and Watsonia Rd intersection closure day and night)
  • 27 January: Line marking on the pedestrian crossing (night work including road closure)
  • 30 January: Crossing signals will be activated (by Department of Transport and Planning)

Until this work is done, please use the existing pedestrian crossing points near the IGA or near Black Street.

Library parking

The car park closest to the library (north car park) has closed permanently and will become a community space with seating, landscaping, a play area and a new toilet block.

The car park section closest to the old toilet block (south car park) is closed temporarily and will re-open when the Town Square is finished.

When the Town Square is finished there will be 33 parking spaces in the immediate library area, including the upgraded south car park and new spaces to be created on Watsonia Road and Ibbotson Street. We will then undertake another car parking study to monitor car park usage.

Library access

You will still be able to get into the library the same way. The current entrances will remain open and alternative access will be arranged, if necessary, during construction. Footpath access around the side of the library and towards the station will remain.

Update on Watsonia Road angle parking

  • Linemarking works have been completed
  • Eight (8) additional spaces were created.

Extreme weather and service authority timeframes can impact on our construction plans, but we will keep you informed of any changes.
