Project update - February 2022

21 February 2022

In November last year, we provided consultation results for the proposed pedestrian access improvements on the Odenwald Road Bridge.

We have since received further comments in relation to the modifications to Option 1 - Trail Plan that was adopted. A summary of the feedback received and our position on these matters is detailed below ; and further modifications have been made.

Feedback receivedCouncil's position
Sight visibility and speeding vehicles
  • Temporary kerb and bollards will be extended into Studley Road to further reduce traffic speeds and increase sight visibility at the intersection.
  • A convex mirror will be installed on the north west corner of the Alandale Road and Odenwald Road intersection to assist vehicle turning left towards the bridge from Alandale Road.
  • A request has also been sent to Metro Trains to consider the removal of vegetation within the rail corridor.

Keep-Clear linemarking at Odenwald Road and Alandale Road intersection
  • Keep-Clear linemarking will be installed on Odenwald Road at the intersection of Alandale Road to assist vehicles turning and travelling straight through the intersection.
Give way arrangement along the bridge

  • This matter is considered to be the same as for any local road which allows parking to occur on both sides of the road. One vehicle is expected give way to oncoming traffic already using the road space.
  • Additionally, given the short length of the bridge, it is considered unlikely to be a concern.
Removal of slip lane and overtaking lane on Studley Road from the original plan
  • The installation of a slip lane for vehicles turning left from Studley Road into Odenwald Road would involve the removal of kerb and channel and extensive drainage works. Undertaking these works for the trial arrangement is not considered appropriate.
  • The installation of a slip lane and overtaking lane on Studley Road will make it more convenient for through traffic and is likely to increase the use of the road.
  • The operation of the road and traffic movement will be assessed during the trial and if considered an issue, these changes can be included in the permanent arrangement if the trial is successful.
Lack of street lighting
  • Lighting will be upgraded at the proposed raised platform on Odenwald Road, near the intersection of Studley Road and at the speed hump in front of No.40 Odenwald Road.
  • As the application process with the service authorities can take up to 12 months, it is likely the upgrade will occur after the trial has been completed.

Option 1 Trial Plan for Odenwald Bridge, Eaglemont

We will continually review the traffic operation in the area to identify safety issues during the trial. If required, we can implement any further changes.

This is consistent with the advice from Metro Trains Melbourne (MTM) who also indicate they would prefer the bridge to maintain the proposed trial arrangements.

During the trial, a functional design of a separate pedestrian bridge will be undertaken to determine indicative construction costs. We will use this plan to continue to advocate for funding with the Federal and State Government for the construction of a separate pedestrian bridge.
