Managing water in Banyule

The Water Plan addresses the Council Plan 'Planet' key direction to ‘conserve water and improve stormwater’. Our overarching objectives are to:

  • Minimise Council’s water use; and
  • Improve urban drainage and stormwater management.

Our approach to these objectives focuses on;

  • integrating both water conservation and stormwater improvement opportunities
  • setting and attaining targets; and
  • delivering education programs.

Water Plan Overview

Our approach to achieving Banyule's water objectives is guided by the following steps, to:

  1. Reduce water consumption
  2. Investigate alternative water sources
  3. Implement Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) projects
  4. Deliver education and awareness raising programs to the community; and
  5. Undertake improvements to urban drainage.

We monitor our performance through the following targets, with annual results captured within the State of Environment Report:

  • Water conservation – we will permanently constrain Council annual potable water use to below 200 million litres
  • Stormwater improvement – annually we will remove the following pollutants from stormwater:

- 55 tonnes of litter
- 150 tonnes of sediment
- 930 kilograms of nitrogen

We are able to undertake effective action around water by using a partnership model. This recognises that Council, the community and numerous stakeholders need to work together in order to identify and implement best practice water management.
