The Stewardship Plan

The Environmental Stewardship Plan 2019 - 2021 was adopted by Council on 29 April 2019.

The Plan focuses on:

  • Supporting and educating the community to protect, enhance and experience the environment, working together with local friends groups and environmental organisations; and
  • Managing recreation and open space in an environmentally sustainable way.

What is environmental stewardship?

Environmental stewardship relates to our shared responsibility to manage and protect our natural environment. It recognises that people are a part our ecosystem and what we do and how we live impacts on the environment and the broader communities wellbeing.

Environmental Stewardship at Banyule promotes active and healthy living through supporting household sustainability, community development, active volunteerism and a healthy environment.

Plan Overview

The Banyule Environmental Stewardship Strategic Plan addresses environmental stewardship within Banyule through four strategic themes:

Engagement: We aim to engage the community in a variety of programs that will improve knowledge and appreciation of the natural environment. We do this by running environment-focused activities at major events; coordinating the annual Change Makers networking event; and delivering the Waste Wise education program.

Enablement: We want more people to undertake positive environmental action. We do this by making funds available to community groups, schools and individuals through our annual Environmental Sustainability Grants program; by providing a free 'Community Leaders in Sustainability' program; and by facilitating the Teachers Environment Network.

Partnership: Environmental stewardship is a shared community responsibility. We recognise the significant experience within our community and as a result we develop partnerships with volunteer groups, as well as other local government and non-government organisations to ensure we deliver best practice programs.

Leadership: Council aims to be a leader in environmental sustainability. We provide leadership through our everyday operations, including our internal environmental program (Enviro Reps); the administration of the Significant Tree and Vegetation Register; our continued pursuit of waste avoidance at Council events; and the installation of solar panels on Council-owned and leased buildings.
